Bone - Coggle Diagram
Bone
Bone anatomy
epiphysis
cartilagenous, synchondroses joint
at kind of the end of bone and is where a lot of bone remodeling occurs
diaphysis
this contains the medullary canal
long part of the bone
metaphysis
where bone kinda flares out when it meets the epiphysis
Response to Stress
tensile stress
bone elongates and aligns itself with the line of tensile force.
bone bends when compressed so the convex side of the bend will remodel due to tensile stress
otherwise it usually happen at muscle attachments where they pull on the bone
compressive stress
causes bone to condense and compress and remodel along the line of the compressive force
happens at weight bearing sites
concave side of bone that bends under weight does compressive remodeling
Chemical composition
inorganic
Calcium
hydroxyapatite
binds to GAGs
organic
collagen/fibrous proteins
cells/osteoblasts, clasts and cytes
ground substance/GAGs
remodeling
how remodeling is stimulated
There's a minimum threshold of strain that you have to meet in order to stimulate remodeling
exception is that if you load the bone with super high repetitions below threshold, then you get bone remodeling anyways
