U.S. Government
The First 10 Amendments
1st Amendment
Guarantees freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government.

4th Amendment
Protects you against unreasonable searches. A warrant must be approved for a search with probable cause
5th Amendment
Protects students against self-incrimination, double-jeopardy, due process (being denied life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness), having private property taken without fair compensation, and promises and grand jury.
6th Amendment
Protects the rights of the accused person in a criminal trial. Includes rights to a speedy and public trial with an impartial jury.

Prohibits excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments.

Branches Of Government
Executive
This branch is ran by the President, Vice President, and the Cabinet. They enforce and implement the laws.
Legislative
This branch is represented by Congress which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. They are responsible for making the laws. They also help approving budgets and declaring war.
Judicial
This branch is ran by the Supreme Court. They use a process called "judicial review" to ensure that laws and executive actions are constitutional.
Government Levels
Federal
This level of government is responsible for issues that affect the entire country. Our federal government is located in Washington DC and includes the 3 branches of government
State
This level is in charge of a specific region (state). State government has control over aspects such as education, transportation, public safety and health care. The governor is head of the state government.
Local
Local governments are in charge of smaller subdivisions of the state such as cities, towns, and counties. They mayor is head of this government and they are in charge of community-wide issues.
