VEGETABLES

Vegetables differ in the way that they look and the shapes that they come in. They also taste and feel very different. There is a common misconception that fruit are sweet and vegetables are savoury but that may not always be the case. It is noted that some vegetables: example tomatoes are sweet. Sherell (2021) Vegetables hold different textures when they are raw and when they are cooked.

CLASS ACTIVITY: I would like to create a mystery box with a few vegetables, placed inside and learners would need to place their hands inside and feel the vegetables then take turns guessing which vegetable it is based on the texture and how it feels.
KEY CONCEPT: A vegetable comes from a plant cell and the way in which the cell divides in the row will determine the shape of the particular vegetable. Melancon (2018)
CLASS ACTIVITY :I will give them a paper worksheet with the different vegetables to cut. Then they would need to sort them into different categories to learn the types and shapes of vegetables.

It's important that learners know the history of vegetables instead of mindlessly eating them without any knowledge of where they came from. Furthermore they should take note of the process in the way vegetables arrive in our supermarkets.
-
CLASS ACTIVITY: I will divide the class in two groups, ( one group representing X and the other group representing O) and play a game of X and O's. Whoever wins the game gets the privilege of using my vegetable magnets and placing it on the country of origin- of a simple map that I have printed out. Once all are placed, I will have a chance to explain to the learners that a certain vegetable began in a certain country before they come to South Africa.
KEY CONCEPT: The trip from farms and plantations of where these vegetable comes from to the market and tables of our homes ready to eat.
CLASS ACTIVITY: I would set up a pretend play area as if the classroom is a farm. Each child (or pairs) will get a different responsibility ( Eg, planting seeds, picking fruit etc) right until the produce section in a supermarket. While they are pretending to be farmers, I can explain the process of how it goes from the farm to the market and into our tables.

Technology is a process, so the way in which vegetables grow is also a process. There are various factors in which influences whether your vegetables will grow lushly. Some of these factors include the: right location; the preparation of soil when it is planted and so much more. Gardener (n.d) Even though vegetables are considered the best for your body, there are some vegetables that can cause harm if not eaten in moderation.
-
CLASS ACTIVITY: There will be a big basket with different types of soil that would fill each basket. Learners will be given different seeds for them to plant in their respective soils and monitor how they grow. Envirokidz (2017).
KEY CONCEPT: Using science process skills to experiment the selection of what vegetables you should eat in order to have a balanced diet.
CLASS ACTIVITY: They would have already sorted out the vegetables (healthy vegetables would be pasted into the worksheet) . Thereafter using our hands as a measuring guide, I will show learners that the vegetables are not necessarily unhealthy, but needs to be consumed in moderation of different portions.
