Topic 7 and 8
TOPIC 7 : RESPIRATION
Anaerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration does not require oxygen
In Animals
Glucose ——> lactic acid
lactic acid is toxic at high concentrations so it needs to be broken down and removed quickly
Oxygen debt
High levels of lactic acid will lower the pH in cells causing enzymes to eventually denature
oxygen is required to break down lactic acid
Lactic acid ——> carbon dioxide + water
Post excercise, breathing rate must remain elevated to repay the oxygen debt to repay the oxygen debt to break down lactic acid and supply enough oxygen to resume aerobic respiration
Takes place in cytoplasm
In fungi and plants
Glucose ——> ethanol + carbon dioxide
Used to make bread, brew alcohol and make biofuels
Aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen ——> carbon dioxide + water + ATP
C6H12O6 +6O2 ——> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Occurs in mitochondria
Produces more ATP than Anaerobic Respiration
Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens in all our cells to release energy
The reaction also releases some heat which is used to maintain steady body temperature
Topic 8: gas exchange
Structure of respiration process
