How People are Affected (Cause and Effect and Adaptation)
How does Autumn affect people?
People adapt to the Autumn weather by packing away their summer clothes and wearing their Autumn clothing such as boots, jackets, beanies, scarves and sweaters. The weather is too cold to be wearing short sleeves and dresses. (Sattar, 2024)
Activity: The teacher will discuss the types of clothing worn during Autumn. The teacher will ask questions such as "What do you wear during winter?" and "Why do you wear this item of clothing?" Learners will be provided with paper, glue and magazine cutouts of clothing for every season. The learners will be asked to create their own picture collage of the items of clothing worn during autumn.
How Animals are Affected (Cause and Effect and Adaptation)
Activity: The teacher will play a video about what Animals do during Autumn. Learners will be given a paper with columns titled hibernate, migrate and consume food. The learners will be given pictures of 10 animals and will need to place the animal in the correct column based on how the animal spends Autumn. This is a teacher guided activity. How are animals affected during Autumn? Animals adapt to Autumn by migrating (moving) to warmer areas during Autumn, hibernate (sleep during Autumn or Winter) and gather food for extra layers of fat to keep them warm. (Unknown, 2020)
Technology
Clothing used in Autumn
(Structures)
Activity: The teacher will show the learners pictures of different types of raincoats. Learners will be given plastic bags, wool, cardboard and glue. The learners will design and create their own raincoats that they can use on a rainy day. Specifications: The raincoat should fit you, be water resistant and tear resistant. Picture:
Why do we use raincoats? Raincoats are comfortable, wind resistant and keep us dry. (Unknown, 2023) On rainy days, we often see people without raincoats or umbrellas. These people get wet, cold and even sick. Design and create your own raincoat out of the materials provided. Keep your final product in class to use on rainy days.
Weather Tools used in Autumn
(Tools)
The temperature during Autumn decreases tremendously leading to cold and rainy days. A thermometer is used to check the temperature to make sure that we dress warmly or bring our umbrella's if it is going to rain. What are types of thermometers that we can use to check the temperature? Thermometers that we can use to check temperature include Mercury thermometers, resistance thermometers, bimetallic strip thermometers and constant volume thermometers. (Markings, 2017)
Activity: The teacher will play a song/video for the learners about thermometers. The teacher will discuss Fahreneheit and Celsius. Learners will be given a cardboard cutout of a thermometer. Learners will design and make a thermometer.
Specifications: Clear and visible, creative colours representing hot and cold.

Natural Science
How Nature is Affected (Energy and Change)
Activity: The teacher will show the learners pictures of leaves during Autumn. Learners will collect leaves on the school grounds during Autumn and compare the colours and textures of the leaves.
How is nature affected in Autumn?
Leaves fall off of the trees. The branches and trees turn yellow. Cotton and Corn are ready to be picked. (Mueni, 2019)
The Weather in Autumn (Energy and Change)
Activity: The learners will observe and measure the temperature every day for a month and identify the weather on a weather chart. At the end of the month, the learners will discuss the weather patterns that were observed during Autumn with the class.
What is the weather like in Autumn?
The weather in Autumn is cold. There are light rains and fog due to the decrease in temperature. (Mueni, 2019)
