Case study: Rollie & Duck (2005), 'Duck's stages of dissolution'
Intrapsychic stage (unhappy with relationship): an individual, internal process involving reflection on the state of the relationship generally and the partner specifically.
Dyadic phase (discuss/argue about it with partner): individuals reveal to the partner their concerns regarding the relationship and attempt to redefine the relationship. May try to understand each other or get defensive causing conflict.
Social phase (how will I explain the breakup?): recognising that relationships are embedded in social networks, is when the news of dissolution is shared with members of social network.
The grave-dressing phase (getting over it): individuals retrospectively make sense of the history of the relationship by developing an account that is used to cast the individual in a favourable light.
LATER UPDATE - Resurrection phase (ready for someone new): individual has learnt from experience of breakup and is now ready for a new relationship. Often involves re-working and reframing the past relationship, seeking advice from others and sharing self-enhancing stories in order to move forward.
Evaluation
Limitations: whilst a useful explanation may have little benefit to people actually going through process of dissolution, does not present all current moods of relationships, conducted on white middle class married couples thus little insight into different types of relationships (e.g. homosexual) or cultures, based on retrospective reports thus potentially biased and more likely to present in a linear fashion.
