I love this idea in theory, and I think it can work very well for certain ages/settings.
I would have liked this method as a high school student! I have experienced this method as an undergrad/post grad student with success.
I do not believe it works well in my current job. Parents of my middle schoolers do NOT want their students to have homework and actively rally against it. Students can fail classes with no consequences, so there is no reason for an unmotivated student to take this on.
