Natural Science
Sub-topic 1: Taste and texture of vegetables
Class activity: allow learners to bring different types of vegetables ,allowing for one vegetable to be raw and one to be cooked. The teacher will cut the vegetable in small pieces and blindfold the learners. Each learner will have the opportunity to feel and taste the different vegetables and state if it is sweet, sour or bitter in terms of taste, and the opportunity to feel and guess what vegetable they have touched, stating if it soft, hard or jelly like. Therefore learners will have the opportunity to compare the taste an texture between vegetables.
concept: Name the different taste and texture found in vegetables? Vegetables have different taste and textures that comes from different parts of the plant. only a certain part of the vegetable is edible. "Vegetables are usually grouped according to the portion of the plant that is eaten such as leaves (lettuce), stem (celery), roots (carrot), tubers (potato), bulbs (onion) and flowers (broccoli)." (UCDavis,2022)
Sub-topic 2 Different types of vegetables
Concept: What the 5 different types of vegetables? There are different types of vegetables that come from various parts of the plant. vegetables come from the root, like onion, potato and beetroot.
Class activity: the teacher cuts vegetables into different types of shapes. The learners are required to use the different shape vegetables and create a picture.
Technology
Sub-topic 1:Where vegetables come from?
Concept: vegetables grow with soil , water and sunlight however with climate change and high demands. Technology is used in the planting process to allow for the process to be quicker. The use of the geographical information system is one of the few systems used to enhance the quality and production of vegetables.
Class activity: learners are put into groups and each learner will make a different vegetable puppet using recyclable materials. Once their puppets are made the learners will put on a show for the class on where the vegetable they chose comes from.
Sub-topic 2: Colour and shapes of vegetables
Class activity: the teacher can provide different cuts of vegetables for learners. Then the learners will make different faces using the vegetables.
Concept: the cell wall in a plant will determine whether the plant will be tall, short or round. The cell wall is the outer part of the plant.
Social Science
Sub-topic 2: Taste and texture of vegetables
Concept: in different cultures vegetables are interpreted differently. some cultures use vegetables in desserts and others consider using vegetables in a sweet dish not acceptable. Some vegetables are seasonal while others are found all year around
Class activity: show and tell. Learners bring a vegetable from a certain culture. They will now show the class a simple dish to make with that vegetable and speak about the chosen vegetable.
