Different types of vegetables
Learners will observe and learn the information
There are two types of vegetables: the type that grows above ground such as lettuce, spinach, brussels sprouts, and cabbage are the leaves of plants. Asparagus and kohlrabi are stems. Broccoli, cauliflower, and artichokes are flowers. We also have the type that grows underground also known as root vegetables, e.g. carrots, beets, turnips, radishes, and sweet potatoes, potatoes. Tastes and textures of vegetables
Vegetables have a variety on textures and tastes. Texture is the feel or consistency of substances. For example, cooked asparagus is soft, fibrous and pulpy, cucumber is crisp, firm and juicy, raw carrots are hard and crisp, and cooked peas are soft and mealy. J, Smewing. 2021. Different ways to process vegetables
Learners will complete a matching activity, matching the same storing process to a duplicate of it.
There are many ways to process vegetables. Once vegetable have been picked and harvested from a farm or garden we can store them and process them in different ways, mainly blanching (heating vegetables in hot water or steam), dehydrating (applying radiant heat of the sun to remove water for the vegetables), canning (putting foods with a preservative into metal cans or glass jars using heat to cause a seal), freezing (cooling foods to below zero degrees to ensure it lasts for a longer time), fermenting and pickling (placing food into an acid to ensure its longer life using spices and vinegars). Where vegetables come from
Where often find vegetables growing on farm and we are able to grow vegetables in our gardens too. Sometimes we find that certain vegetables grow more in certain countries. Example, Africa is known for okra, India for the mango and lime, South America for the Pineapple and China for the persimmons. Northern Arizona University.
