Blood Supply
- List the 3 main arterial trunks off the aorta that are responsible for supplying the GI tract. Which general region of the gut does each of these 3 main arteries of the aorta supply? What specific portions of the tubular gut are contained within each of these regions?
- Trace the branches of the celiac trunk and understand the viscera and structures supplied. Be able to understand how blockages impact the flow of blood.
Venous Drainage
- Be able to label a diagram of the vessels forming the hepatic portal vein. Where does the formation of the hepatic portal vein occur? What is the function of the hepatic portal system?
stomach
- Is there an anatomical sphincter at the gastroesophageal junction? What keeps gastric reflux from normally occurring at the gastroesophageal junction?
- Be able to label the various anatomical regions of the stomach.
- Describe the location of the stomach and the relationship with nearby structures.
Liver
- Understand the various anatomical features of the liver.
- What divides the right and left lobes of the liver anatomically when viewed from its anterior aspect?
- What is the bare area of the liver? Why is the bare area of the liver important?
Portal Triad
- What is the portal triad and where is it located?
Hepatic Portal Vein
- What is portal hypertension? Obstruction of what vessel often results in portal hypertension?

- Explain the location of the spleen within the abdomen. Is the spleen a GI organ?
Portal vs Caval System
- What is the importance of the portocaval anastomoses? Name the location of at least three of the
more clinically relevant ones.
Gallstone
- What are gallstones? Where are they commonly lodged/impacted?
