Definition
This organizational chart separates the functions of a business in either products, functions or even region.
Characteristics
By product
Usually within large businesses that have many products, so the staff will be divided in what product they focus on. For example, if a business produces soft drinks, snacks, and sweets there can be a deparment dedicated to each of this products.
By region
Multinational companies are often organized this way, where there is a major department for each country or continent as the business desires. This allows the business be more aware and responsive to different local and cultural differences.
By function
Most business are organized this way. The more typical is organized by the different operational roles within a business such as Marketing, Production, Finance, and Human Resources. When needed business will also add different deparments such as Research and Development, Administration, etc.

Definition
A flat organizational structure has few levels in its organization chart, showing minimal levels between the operatives and the CEO
Advantages

Its cheaper to operate because there are fewer managers to be hired due to fewer levels in the hierarchy
Smaller teams are generally easier to control and manage,
with greater team cohesiveness.
