Elements of a biological control system - Coggle Diagram
Elements of a biological control system
Head of baby pushes against cervix
Regulated or controlled variable (temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose)
Stimulus: increase in temperature, blood pressure or blood glucose
Receptors or sensors: Hypothalamus, baroreceptors, beta cells of pancreas
Afferent pathway (input signal to control center)
Integrating or control center
Efferent pathway (output signal to effectors)
Effectors or target tissues
Response
Arterial pressure (controlled variable)
Baroreceptors are sensors
Afferent pathway to the control center which is the medulla and vasomotor centers
Sympathetic nervous system (efferent system)
Blood vessels and the heart are the effectors
This causes an increase in arterial pressure which sends you a negative feedback to tell the brain when to lower the pressure back down
Blood pressure
Baroreceptors
Vasomotor centers and medulla
Cardiopulmonary pressures--cardiopulmonary receptors--vasomotor centers
Sympathetic system (efferent pathway)
Blood vessels and the heart (effectors)
Afferent pathway
Nerve impulses from cervix are transmitted to the brain
Brain stimulates pituitary gland to secrete oxytocin
Oxytocin is carried in bloodstream to uterus
Oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions and pushes baby towards cervix
Feed forward loop
Negative feedback loop
Positive feedback loop
