Small intestine
Gizzard
Proventriculus
Crop
Esophagus
Beak
Molecules
Bile
Produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, it facilitates the digestion of fats.
Hydrochloric acid
Present in the proventriculus, it helps to break down food into its simplest components.
Digestive enzymes
Secreted in the proventriculus and intestine for the processing of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
Process
Ingestion
Food is taken in with the beak and crushed into smaller pieces.
Elimination
Non-digested wastes are eliminated.
Fermentation
In the caecum, fibrous materials are fermented, allowing the extraction of additional nutrients.
Mechanical digestion
In the gizzard, the feed is mechanically crushed with the help of small stones or ingested sand.
Storage
The food passes into the crop for temporary storage.
Absorption of nutrients
It occurs mainly in the small intestine, where the digested nutrients pass into the bloodstream.
Chemical digestion
In the proventriculus, enzymes and hydrochloric acid are released to start the chemical digestion.
