Textbook: Chapter 2
-
to address a health problem you must first describe its burden of disease, this is when a disability or death is caused by a disease. to understand a health problem you must also look at the course of a disease. this is how often a disease occurs and how it behaves once it does.
Etiology - understanding the reasons for disease. public health calls etiology the contributory cause. It has three main requirements:
- The “cause” is associated with the “effect” at the individual level
- The “cause” precedes the “effect” in time.
- Altering the “cause” alters the “effect.”
Different types of studies:
- Case-control studies - establish the “cause” is associated with the “effect” at the individual level.
- Cohort studies - establish the “cause” precedes the “effect.”
- Randomized controlled trials - establish altering the “cause” alters the “effect.”
