Chapter 10: Transport and their spatial distribution
Transport systems
It connects people between different locations, providing opportunities for social interactions and economic trade.
Transport systems can be characterized by:
Quality of infrastructure
Reliability and performance of a transport system is dependent on the quality of its infrastructure
Transport infrastructure is the key to moving people and goods. E.g. roads, railways, walkways, bridges, bicycle lanes, signages, information sysrems that show real-time transport info.
Quality of transport systems can be measured by indicators such as:
Frequency: number of occurrences of a service
Convivence: ease of movement
Capacity: number of people or amount of goods that can be moved
Environmental: Environmental impact. ( Also, environmental pollution is the introduction of substances to the natural environment ) <- extra
Coverage: availability and reach of infrastructure
Variety of modes
The way people and goods are moved is dependent on the variety of transport modes offered in cities
Cities generally offer a wide variety of transport modes that travel on or through land, water and air.
Motorised modes such as public transport may move along fixed routes and stop at specific nodes according to a time schedule.
Cities are encouraging non-motorised transport modes such as walking and cycling -> environmentally friendly and promote health benefits.
Density of network
Movements between locations depend on the existence of transportation networks. A transport network contains nodes that are linked by routes.
Each node represent a location that provides entry to the transport network. (e.g. Bus stop, MRT stations, interchange )
A route represents the path for travel between nodes.
Network density refers to the number of nodes and routes in an area, more nodes and routes in an area, the denser the transport network density.
