El Niño

The water from the deep oceans is rich in nutrients and this causes algae blooms. These blooms start of as important food web, including for commercial fishing- providing major sources of food for humans as well as other animals.

Droughts
-
-
What is a drought?
Period of a below-average precipitation in a given region, resulting in prolonged shortages in the water supply
If a place is dry, doesn’t mean a drought. Drought is only if they are experiencing complete unusual low rain
-
Types of drought
-
Agricultural drought (2)
Reduction in the amount of water available for crop growth.
i.e. the soil moisture deficit during the growing season.
Not just caused by a lack of precipitation.
High temperatures lead to evapotranspiration which lead to a reduction in soil moisture.
Hydrological drought (3)
Reduction in the amount of water in rivers, lakes and the rate of aquifer recharge.
Some argue that this is not just caused by weather, for instance humans may divert water for human uses. This blurs the difference between drought and water scarcity in general.

La Nina
-
-
Adopted for the opposite side of the spectrum, which sees episodes of cooler than average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial pacific
The conditions for declaring la niña differ but, during an event the sea temperatures can often fall 3-5 degrees below average. Cooler and drier than average weather is experienced in the tropical eastern pacific.
