P.E.R.I.E Process
P
roblem: What is the health problem?
Burden of Disease:
the occurrence of disability and death due to a disease
Course of a Disease:
how often the disease occurs, how likely it is to be present currently
Distribution of Disease:
How a disease is spread out in a population
When these types of factors occur more frequently among groups with the disease than among groups without the disease, we call them
risk indicators
The cause of death on a death certificate is classified using a standardized coding system known as the International Classification of Diseases
E
tiology: What are the contributory cause?
Contributory Cause:
Understanding the reasons for disease is fundamental to the prevention of disability and death
Strength of the Relationship:
we are interested in knowing how closely related the risk factor is to the disease
Relative Risk:
the probability of developing the disease if the risk factor is present compared to the probability of developing the disease if the risk factor is not present
Consistency:
implies that studies in different geographic areas and among a wide range of groups produce similar results
Biological Plausibility:
we can explain the occurrence of disease based upon known and accepted biological mechanisms
I
mplementation: How can we get the job done?
Primary Intervention:
Preventing the disease before it occurs
Secondary Intervention:
Aiming in the early detection of disease while the individual is asymptomatic.
Tertiary Intervention:
Occurs after the initial occurrence of symptoms. Aims to prevent irreversible consequences of the disease
R
ecommendations: What works to reduce the health impacts?
Recommendations are summaries of the evidence about which interventions work to improve health outcomes
Score:
the quality of the evidence is scored based in large part upon the types of investigations and how well the investigation was conducted
E
valuation: How well do the interventions work in practice?
