(Friendly fire) They had growing tension by 1933 because Rohm led the SA, which was nearly three million strong. Members were fiercely loyal to Rohm, supporting his calls to tax elite groups to help the unemployed. Awkward for Hitler since he depended upon the support of the same elites. Army commander elites sus of Rohm, unsettled by the idea of making the SA into a second German Army. Hitler seized the opportunity to make full use of his emergency power to order the killing of key figures in the SA,on the grounds of treason and scheming, strengthening his control over the internal government, all because of the enabling act.
