African American Culture
Compton, California
Compton is a city in Southern California which was originally a white dominated county. It was always a middle class suburb, and 95% of its population was white.
Population demographics started to change in the mid 20th century, with many African Americans were moving into Compton. This led to a surge in vandalism, terror and violence. The flight, with a mass emigration from Compton, was sparked.
Compton grew to a traditional "ghetto" part of LA, with growing unemployment, poverty, and crime. Additionally, the formation of rival gangs like the Crips and Bloods led to a drug-dominated economy. The song Straight Outta Compton is a rap song which highligthts the gang culture in Compton
Even after political intervention and the setting of a black mayor, brutality and violence still existed, and to this day, Compton continues to struggle.
