THEME 1: CHALLENGES TO RELIGIOUS BELIEF - AS A PRODUCT OF THE HUMAN MIND
SIGMUND FREUD
Austrian doctor who is often called the father of psychoanalysis.
He studied how the mind works and believed that our thoughts and feelings can be influenced by things we don't realise, like childhood experiences.
He also explored dreams and the idea of the unconscious mind.
ID, EGO & SUPEREGO
Id:
This part that wants what it wants right now. It is all about basic needs and desires, like hunger and pleasure.
Ego:
This part tries to balance the id and the real world. It helps us make decisions and think about what is practical and acceptable.
Superego:
This is like our inner voice or conscience. It tells us what is right and wrong based on our morals and values.
NEUROSIS
Term to describe mental health issues that cause anxiety, worry, or emotional distress, but do not include losing touch with reality.
People with neurosis might feel overly worried or sad and may have trouble coping with everyday life.
RELIGION - FREUD
He believed that religion was a kind of mental disorder because he thought it was a way for people to cope with their fears and anxieties.
He saw religious beliefs as illusions or fantasies that helped people deal with life's challenges, much like how a person with neurosis might create their own way to handle stress.
PRIMAL HORDE
Within the primal horde, there was an ‘alpha’/dominant leader who slept with all women of his horde.
A certain case Freud uses is the case of a son killing his father to sleep with all the women, but then feels guilty, so uses a totem (animal) in place so they reduce the guilt. They then make a rule for incest and not to kill the worshipped totem.
OEDIPUS COMPLEX
Concept from Freud that describes a child's feelings of desire for the opposite-sex parent and jealousy towards the same-sex parent.
For example, a young boy might feel a special attachment to his mother and see his father as a rival.
