Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: The author wrote that at first there wasn't a name for the region, but later the Greeks named it Mesopotamia, meaning " between the rivers." Also we know the "Mesopotamia was the birthplace of writing, as well as many other inventions and discoveries that changed the world." Modern Iraq was where Mesopotamia was before. ( Steele 6)
Art: The graphics show that the art in Mesopotamia developed from, pottery to wool and lastly jewellery. I know because it states " by 3000 BC metal workers were mixing tint with copper to make alloy, bronze." Malachite was used for jewelry usually to ward off 'evil spirits'. (source 28)
Architecture: A ziggurat is a lasting symbol of ancient Mesopotamia, in which is made of a terraced platform of bricks. It represented a mountain stretching from the Earth to Heaven. The Ziggurats themselves had small temples or shrines on top reached by a long staircase.
Government: The rules from the government were displayed on a cuneiform. The mesopotamians believed that their government were gods walking on earth. They would do whatever their government tells them including religious duties.
Religion: They believed in many gods and goddesses, they believed this because there was nothing else to explain the world. They also believe that the stars were the cows of a god. The crescent moon was thought to be the boat of the god, Sin.
Writing: As the first cities arose people began to require records of ownership, deals, business and ownership. "Around 3300 BCE the citizens of Uruk were using about 700 different symbols, or pictographs." The Sumerians devised the world's first scripts or writing system. (Steele 12)
Ancient Egypt
Location: The author wrote that on
the banks of the Nile lived the Egyptians. This land was named "Kemet or the "Black Land" because it was covered by rich dark silt. In the text it says that " more than 90 percent of Egypt is desert," which is called "the Red Land" ( Hart 8)
Art: The article says 'they had great big festivals, in which thousands of people were entertained with songs and dance.' The people of Egypt would get drunk on wine, a common drunk juice at the time. Lastly the princess would play the harp to finish off the festival. ( Hart 50)
Architecture: The first pyramid was built as the burial place for king Djoser. It rose in 6 stages and is called the step pyramid. But in c. 1000 BCE all the pyramids were robbed of their precious contents. ( Hart 20)
Religion: The author wrote The Egyptians worshiped hundreds of different gods and goddesses, sometimes it was difficult to tell them apart. Many of the gods and goddesses represented animals, a baboon was seen as the god of wisdom. (Hart 24)
Government: The author wrote 'the King was the most powerful person in Egypt at the time, this was also because he was thought to be a walking god.' The author also wrote ' The queen could be seen as a goddess as well.' However only rarely did a women ever rule Egypt, in that time. (Hart 10)
Writing: Scribes were the only ones in Egypt that were allowed to write hieroglyphs, which was the most difficult thing to do considering their writing was made up of drawings. They could be written left to right, right to left, up and down, or down and up. Scribes living on the end of the Egyptian civilization also had to be able to write Greek, the language of their overlords.(Hart 34)
Ancient China:
Religion: Religion: Confucius loved that In the Zhou that as through the years there family and friends turned on each other for power and making turmoil (Chaos). On page 12 it also said "It was based on kindness and respect and the strength of the family". As a result the Zhou Dynasty was a fine dynasty at the end. ( cotterell 20)
Writing On page 11 it said that questions and answers were inscribed on oracle bones. It also states that " an ox bone or a tortoiseshell was scorched until it cracked. The oracle bones were used by the shang kings to consult with ancestors. ( cotterell 11)
Art: The art in Ancient China was terracotta warriors, these were statues that the emperor ordered to be built so that he wouldn't be alone when he died. The text also says that no two soldiers would have the same face, this was because these statues were inspired by the soldiers serving Qin. On page 16 it also says that these statues once welded real weapons but these were stolen by robbers after the fall of Qin. ( cotterell 16)
