Ancient Civilizations :
Mesopotamia
Religion: There were a lot of different types of gods and goddesses that the Sumerians worshipped. The author wrote "The Sumerians worshipped many gods and goddesses. Later in the text he mentioned that they also worshipped ghosts, demons, and spirits. (Steele)
Architecture:A common symbol of Mesopotamian architecture is something called a ziggurat. According to the text, "A lasting symbol of Ancient Mesopotamia is the ziggurat, a massive terraced platform made of brick." It looked a lot like a stepped mountain and it was used in sacred areas where it was thought that the gods and goddesses hung out. (Steele)
Writing: Ancient Sumerians used a pictograph system of writing to keep track of ownership, government, and business deals. I know this because the text says "By around 3300 BCE the citizens of Uruk were using about 700 different symbols, or pictographs." The book also states that this was the world's first system of writing that we know of. (Steele)
Art: The author wrote that the arts they crafted were made at a very early point in their history. I know this because on page 28 it said that "they were molding clay into simple pots by the eighth millennium BCE ". Arts from Mesopotamia are helpful and good to us because there arts show us how wealthy, smart and resourceful, this is true because it would tell us what they used to make art and how they made it, and how rare the items they used were.
Location: The author wrote that the location didn't have a name but eventually it was called mesopotamia, meaning "between the rivers." Mesopotamia is the birthplace of writing as wall as additional inventions that have changed the world. In the book it states that "the region between the rivers is sometimes called the cradle of civilization."
(Steele 6)
Government: The rulers in ancient Sumeria were well respected by the people, and had a lot of power and religious connection. According to the author, "Sumerian rulers enjoyed great power and fame and their exploits and deeds were remembered for centuries." In addition to their other duties, they were required to do certain military tasks as well. (Steele)
