Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Location: In the text it said that ancient Mesopotamia is part of modern-day Iraq. Mesopotamia was also located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Also, according to the book,"much of the region is now hot dessert, but many areas were much more fertile in antiquity."(Steele 6)
Writing:The author wrote down that they used writing for business deals, ownership, and for the government. In the book it said," At first they used picture symbols to represent picture objects as cattle, grain, or fish." They used a stylist for writing in meta or stone. (Steele 12)
Architecture:The author wrote that the Mesopotamians lasting symbol was the ziggurats. The ziggurats represent the mountains and the heavens. In the book it said,"Ziggurats looked similar to the stepped pyramids of ancient Egypt, which served as special tombs, but served a different purpose." ( Steele 24)
Art: In the text it said that in the earlier part of history the Mesopotamians had mastered the arts. The Mesopotamians created clay sculptures and then painted the designs on them. The book stated,"Jewelry was both worn by men and women and indicated status and wealth." (Steele 28)
Religion: The author wrote that they had worshipped many Gods and Goddesses. In Mesopotamia they also believed in other things such as spirits, ghosts, and other demons.The Author wrote," Later Mesopotamian peoples took up or adapted Sumerian Gods, sometimes giving them new names." (Steele 14)
Government: The text said that Mesopotamia is a city-state. Cities controlled the countryside around the area, in the area were nobles and other rulers. The book stated,"Thick, defencive walls were built around each city, for the states were always at war with each other." (Steele 8)
Ancient Egypt
Location: The author wrote that the Egyptian live on both sides of the Nile River. Today and long ago the civilization is covered in more than 90% of sand. The book had stated," The Egyptian lived on the banks of the Nile River or besides canals extending from it" (Hart 8)
Writing: The book had stated that the writing that they used were called hieroglyphs. According to the text back then and today it is really hard to master or even write. The author wrote that,"Hieroglyphs were used on state mountains, temples, tombs, and religious papriy." (Hart 34)
Religion: In the book it said that they worshipped a lot of different gods and goddesses. A lot of the gods that they worshipped were represented by animals. On page 8 it said,"This detail from a 19th-century painting shows the artist's idea of a workshop in which Egyptian figures of the gods were made." (Hart 24)
Archiculture: The author had written that the Great Pyramids were originally built as a burial place for kings. Normally when someone is buried in the Pyramid it represents a stairway to go and join the sun god in the sky. According to the text it said," The idea of this Pyramid was to recreate the mound that had emerged out at the beginning of time, on which the Sun god stood and brought the other Gods and Goddesses." (Hart 20)
Art: In the book it told me that they were a big fan of gold and had lots of it, but didn't have a lot of knowledge on emeralds, rubies, or diamonds. The Egyptians use the gold to make jewelry and sometimes even paintings. The author had written,"Middle Eastern influence led the Egyptians to have their ear lobes pierced and wear earrings." (Hart 56)
Government: The book had stated that the king, the court, and a lot of other important people attend meetings that are about politics.Most of the time when the people attend the meetings they would bend down and kiss the king on the leg as a sign of respect. According to the text it said," At the great State occasions like royal jubilee celebrations or the giving of gifts to favored courtiers, the king and cout gathered together, and top officials, diplomats, and high priests would attend." (Hart 12)
Ancient China
Art: The author states that most of the art were related to religious or ceremonial events. In the text it said," Chinese craftsman often decorated the Buddha with bright, shining gold, or guilt to emphasize holiness. The book also stated that's craftsmen developed techniques for decorating ceramics, blue and white were most popular. (Cotterell Pg.56)
Writing: On page 11 it said that questions and answers were inscribed on the oracle bones. It also states," an ox bone or tortoise shell was scorched until it was cracked. It was bones used by the Shang Kings to consult with ancestors. (Cotterell pg.11)
Religion: On page 12 it said," The inscription inside the vessel records the grant of territory or office to a friend of the Duke of Kang." It also states that ancestor worship is an important custom for a chines tradition. I also know that Zhou calmed the thought and mind (Cottrell pg.12)
Architecture/Technology: On page 22 it said that watered powered blast furnaces created a blast of heat to improve the cast iron production. The text stated," The magnetic compass was an ancient Chinese invention. In the book it said the earthquake weathercock was used to detect earthquakes when the ball falls from the dragon. (Cotterell Pg.22)
Government: In the book it said that the first emperor had a big impact on Chinese civilization. The author also wrote that most of the emperors were harsh or unfair. According to the text, weapons and violence was a big part of their life, an example is weapons were displayed. (Cotterell pg.14,15,16)
Commerce (Trading): The silk road was spanked across China and Asia, the road ensured the caravans to travel without any danger. In the book it said that they either used silver or bronze coins for payment, they used paper money 2,000 years later. The author had written that on the road they sold silk, spices, tea, porcelain, and lacquer wear. (Cotterell pg.58)
Location: On page 6 it says that the mountains and the desserts cut China off from the rest of the other cultures. It also states in 126B.C., China realized that they weren't the only people or culture in the world. The author states that Ancient China was not affected by any other culture or countries. (Cotterell pg.6)
