Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia
Architecture: Ziggurats and Temples are a structure meant for enduring long period of time as a symbol of the Mesopotamians. In the text it says, ¨The Bible tells how the descendants of Noah quarreled when building the so-called tower of Babel.¨. This means the Babylons could have inspired the people in the Bible to build that tower to heaven. (Steele 24)
Writing: In Mesopotamian times there alphabet/letter group was called the ¨Armana Letters¨. The Mesopotamians also had similar writing tools such as footnotes. These letters and alphabets were also used for popular religious scriptures.
(Steele 34)
Art: While I was reading I found that pottery in Mesopotamia was based out of Anatolia, but was further expanded by Mesopotamians. In the text it says that, ¨The Mesopotamians Mastered many technologies and crafts¨. Some of these crafts and technologies include melting copper, textile production, and carving ivory.(Steele 28)
Religion: The Sumerians believed that the crescent moon was the boat for the ¨Moon God of Sin¨. This matters because later the Mesopotamians took the Sumerian beliefs as their own. The Mesopotamians and Sumerians also made statues of their God´s, and statues of eternal worshippers.(Steele 14)
Government: In the text it says that Sumerian rulers loved power. This means that the rulers want to be all mighty and may have had very strict rules. In the text it says, ¨They show off the great wealth and prestige¨.
(Steele 10)
Location: In the text it said that ancient Mesopotamia is part of modern-day Iraq. Mesopotmis was also located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Also, according to the book, ¨ much of the region is now hot desert, but many areas were much more fertile in antiquity.¨(Steele 6)
Ancient Egypt
Location: The reason Ancient Egypt thrived in trade was the Nile River. The Nile was the most populated River of their time, everybody traded their possessions along the Nile. Egypt was also a boomtown because of the pyramids, even back then people would come site-seeing the pyramids, and the Egyptians found ways to make money from them.
(Hart 38)
Religion: In Ancient Egypt, ¨THE GODS OF THE TEMPLES played little part in the lives of ancient Egyptians¨. I expected this from a Christian point of view but the way they tried to solve their problems because their Gods did not help is magic. They also made TONS of sacrifices with cows, which were very important for living back then and still are today.
(Hart 26)
Architecture: The first of the Great Pyramids was built as a tomb and burial place for King Djoser in 2650 BCE. This pyramid was made by an excellent architect named Imhotep, this pyramid he built was labeled a Step Pyramid. Later on in time another king built a pyramid except it was a slope pyramid meant to resemble the ¨mound that came out of the watery ground at the beginning of time¨.
(Hart 20)
Art: In the time of the Ancient Egyptians their form of art was mostly their hieroglyphs and jewelry. Even in the text it says,"You can see the glint of gold everywhere in Egyptian jewelry-mines". From this quote this proves that the Ancient Egyptians put most of their artwork into jewelry, pottery, and hieroglyphs.
(Hart 56)
Government: Throughout the Ancient Egyptian times they had tons of famous pharaohs who ruled in many different ways like King Tut. In their times the pharaohs were thought to be Gods so any law that was made was followed. Also in their government there were close to none assassination attempts.
(Hart 10)
Writing: In Ancient Egyptian times the scribes had to be experts at writing, which were things like hieroglyphs. There was two main types of writing and for things like business they used a writing called hieratic, which was always written from right to left. In the text it says, "Scribes living at the end of the Egyptian civilization also had to be able to write Greek, the language of their overlords".
(Hart 34)
