FACTORS
Economic factors are the main trigger. The 1997 monetary crisis triggered inflation, unemployment, and widespread poverty. This triggered public unrest, especially students and the common people.
Political factors also played a significant role. The New Order government under President Soeharto was criticized for rampant corruption, collusion, and nepotism (KKN). Injustice and political repression further worsened the situation.
The Trisakti tragedy on May 12, 1998 became a turning point. The shooting of 4 Trisakti University students by security forces sparked mass anger and massive demonstrations in various cities.
SARA issues were then exploited by certain parties to worsen the situation. Riots, looting, and arson occurred, especially in Jakarta and its surroundings.
The resignation of President Soeharto on May 21, 1998 was the peak of this event. The fall of the New Order paved the way for the reform era in Indonesia.
