3.1 Intro to biodiversity
Species diversity
The variety of species per unit area
Includes number of species present and their relative abundance
High species diversity = greater complexity
Habitat diversity
Range of places where animals and plants can live
e.g. Woodland
rivers, soil, trees = high habitat diversity
e.g. Desert
few habitats: sand, occasional vegetation = low habitat diversity
Genetic diversity
Range of genetic material present in a range of species
Gene pool
All genes and their alleles present in an interbreeding population
Large gene pool = high genetic diversity
Represents the variety of life on Earth
Evaluates the complexity and health of an area
Need to understand how to quantify it in order to conserve
Increase in habitat diversity -> an increase in the diversity of genes and species
Conservation
protect habitats and ecosystems
aim to slow rate of extinction
usually due to human activity
Hotspots
Areas with high biodiversity and endemic species (not found anywhere else)
