Syncope: AN ABRUPT, TRANSIENT LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
Causes (NEUROCARDIAC/VASODEPRESSOR)
Emotional upset/anxiety
Pain
Acute Illness
Exhaustion
Sight of Blood
Sight of needle
Non cardiac syncope causes (common in the dental office)
seizures
orthostatic hypotension: occurs when a person moves from supine to upright
Hypoglycemia
Hyperventilation
Signs and Symptoms
Pallor
Unconsciousness
Pupil dilation
Weak, slow pulse
Nausea
Signs of recovery
Patient awakens
Vital signs remain stable
Signs of Deterioration
Patient does NOT awaken after 1 minute
Unstable Vitals
PABCD Treatment
P : Trendelenburg (Feet up, head down)
C: Monitor Pulse
A & B : Maintain open airway & administering oxygen may assist in recovery
D: Place crushed ammonia capsule under nose
D: apply cold compress on head or neck
