The Lymphatic system
-
-
-
presents an accessory route by which lymph fluid can flow from the tissues back into the bloodstream

Anatomical Locations
upper horizontal
runs on a line between the apex of the sternum, the collar bone, acromion, and spine of the scapula
sagittal/medial
runs in the middle of the body, separating head, neck and torso into L and R sides
-
gluteal
begins at top of the vertical gluteal fold continues to the middle of the glutes and ends at the popliteal fossa

Lower Extremity Anatomy
Arranged in bundles

Dorso-Lateral Bundle

Drains

And a narrow strip on the heel following the Achilles tendon, along the calf to the popliteal fossa

Lymph Flow
- As interstitial fluid accumulates in the tissues, interstitial pressure increases
- When this pressure exceeds the pressure inside the lymphatic capillaries, the inlet valves (formed by overlapping endothelial cells) open, allowing fluid to flow into the capillaries
- These inlet valves close once the pressure inside rises to prevent backflow
- The lymphatic capillaries are stabilized by anchoring filaments which help them stay open during tissue swelling, ensuring efficient fluid entry
This fluid, now lymph carries lymphatic loads and is transported through the lymphatic system
