In exchange for their loyalty, the king gave land to someone. This person was now a vassal of the king, and could rule over that land. He could also give parts of that land to other people and get his own vassals. This creates a pyramidal system.

Knights serve other nobles and lords in exchange of glory, land and power.

Serfs

serfs were not slaves. As well as obligations, they had some rights and benefits the lord had to grant such as protection, stability and safety.
Peasants
Peasant life was simple and their homes were quite humble, with a single room in some cases.
Lords
Lords had many legal rights over serfs, such as controlling their capacity to marry with people outside of the Manor or leave. They were also the judges in case of a crime or conflict with anyone in the Manor. While serfs were not free, they were not complete slaves. They had some rights as well as obligations.

Holidays
The catholic church gave the peasants and serfs many holidays, festivals and celebrations which helped them rest, entertain and come into contact with other people and places.
Cottages
Peasants and serfs lived in cottages. They were small houses with one or two rooms and very little materials and furniture.

Nobility
Many people were part of the nobility in the middle ages. These people had more land, wealth and power than anyone else. Many of them were also knights, and they would do tournaments to demonstrate their skills.

There were many differences between nobles, but they were all part of an aristocracy

Women in the middle ages
While women could own property, most of society was ruled by men. However, since the lord was often away, women served an important role managing households and finances for their land. Eleanor of Aquitaine is an example of a woman who held power on her own in that time
