Summary: the movie follows the story of Robert Lomax, a white man traveling to China to pursue his dreams of becoming an artist in Hong Kong. As he sails the ocean on his journey, he stumbles across a lady who refuses to interact with Robert. She later opens up to him and introduces herself as Mee-Ling. The two part ways when they land in China and Robert stops by a hotel to rent out for his time being. He is treated very well as the area he is staying in is on the poorer side and the locals see him as a rich white man. Robert goes down to the bar on the bottom of the hotel he is staying at as he sees Mee-Ling again. The two reconnect and it is revealed that Mee-Ling was a fake name to Suzie Wong as she likes to pretend that she is the innocent daughter of a rich father who is a virgin. We see that Suzie is one of the highly prioritized prostitutes in the area as there are numerous men asking to spend time with her. Suzie is persistent in becoming Robert’s permanent girlfriend because she wants to live a lavish life. Through her persistence the two spend more time together leading to Robert doing portraits of her to pursue his career. Eventually, Suzie shows Robert where she stays and we can see that Suzie lives in harsh conditions in a very poorly developed area in Hong Kong that is impacted the worst by seasonal rain patterns. However, Robert is only interested in becoming an artist, but we can see that Suzie is starting to fall in love with Robert. Overtime, Suzie gets tired of waiting for Robert’s love, so she goes around trying to make Robert jealous by meeting guys at the bar and finding a different permanent boyfriend, Ben, who buys materialistic things. This makes Robert realize his love for Suzie as he gets jealous and takes Suzie his own as she splits up with Ben. Later on, Robert finds out that Suzie has a child of her own, WInston, that she keeps hidden because she is afraid of the government taking away her kid. Unfortunately, Robert’s dreams of becoming a successful artist is not going as planned leading the couple to worry about their financial status which escalates to an altercation where Suzie runs off and goes missing for a while. The two find each other during a flood as Suzie is distraught due to the fact that her son is stuck in their home during the flood and the two rush to try and save Winston. Sadly, Winston passes away from their village being hit hard from the weather conditions. At the end of the movie, Suzie, Robert, and Suzie’s prostitute friends gather at the cemetery to pay tribute to Winston. Robert offers Suzie’s son a letter of guidance and asks Suzie to marry her.
