53:45-55:40 - suzie brings friends into roberts room
Suzie seems to be bringing her friends into Robert’s room to show off. Her friends seem really impressed by all the “expensive objects he owns and her claims that he is “crazy mad about” her. At this point in the movie, this is not true and she lies to make it seem like they’re together. This again, depicts Asian women characters as having no character depth. They only seem interested in men and the nice belongings they own.
This scene also depicts Asian women as untrustworthy. Suzie takes advantage of the fact that Robert is away, taking her friends into his room without his knowledge or permission. They go through his things, violating him and his personal living space. Suzie calls for room service using his money, claiming that he will do anything for her. Also, one of her friends, after seeing his expensive silver hairbrush, says that “some day I’ll open shop and sell silver to tourists”. It’s a quick moment, but it appears that she puts the silver hairbrush in her pocket, so it seems like she is stealing the silver and is planning on selling it to make a lot of money. I think these depictions go along with the idea of yellow peril, that people from Asia should be feared because they can take advantage of people from the West.
