components of earth's system
geosphere
Crust
The outermost, thin, solid layer of the Earth where we live, consisting of continental and oceanic plates that float on the mantle.
Mantle
The thick layer of semi-solid rock between the crust and the core, which moves slowly and drives plate tectonics through convection currents.
core
The innermost layer of the Earth, made mostly of iron and nickel, divided into a solid inner core and a liquid outer core, responsible for generating Earth’s magnetic field.
hydrosphere
oceans
Most of the water on our planet is salt water, and the vast majority of this saltwater is present in the oceans.
freshwater
Freshwater is much less abundant than saltwater, and is present in a variety of different places.
surface water
Surface sources of freshwater consist of lakes, rivers, and streams.
groundwater
Freshwater stored beneath ground makes up a small portion of the fresh water on Earth.
glacial water
Water that melts off of glaciers.
atmospheric water vapour
Atmospheric water vapor is the absolute amount of water dissolved in air.
atmosphere
nitrogen
A colorless, odorless, and mostly inert gas that makes up about 78% of the Earth's atmosphere and is crucial for plant growth, often found in fertilizers.
oxygen
A reactive, colorless gas essential for respiration in most living organisms and combustion, making up about 21% of the Earth's atmosphere.
argon
A colorless, odorless, and inert gas that makes up about 1% of the Earth's atmosphere and does not typically react with other elements.
cryosphere
continental ice sheets
Massive ice coverings that spread over entire continents, such as those in Antarctica and Greenland, containing the majority of the world’s freshwater.
ice capsSmaller ice coverings that dome over land, usually found in polar or subpolar regions, but smaller than ice sheets.
glaciers
Large masses of ice that form in cold regions and slowly move over land, often found in mountains.
areas of snow and permafrost
Permanently frozen ground found in polar and high-altitude regions, storing large amounts of carbon and affecting plant life and construction stability.
