Agonist = endogenous or exogenous molecules that elicit a biological response.
Antagonist = molecules that bind to a receptor to limit the effect of agonists but lack an effect of their own
-
Drug + a substance that, when introduced to the body, produces a biological effect for an intended purpose
endogenous agonist = transmit that signal to the inside of the cell which starts a cascade of molecular events.
L1 Learning Objectives
Describe ways in which drugs may be classified (therapeutic use, mode of action, chemical structure)
-
-
-
-
Identify molecular targets for drug action including receptors, ion channels, enzymes and transporters
Drugs applied to the skin diffuses through skin, tissue and to the sensory neuron
Ion Channels - Action potentials are created by Sodium channels - Drugs can block to prevent action potential
Drug targets are molecules (often proteins), the function of which can be modulated by a drug to produce a biological effect.
-
Define the terms agonist, antagonist, partial agonist and allosteric modulator
Describe the difference between chemical names, generic names and brand names for drugs
