Birth of Civilizations: Civilizations began to emerge during this period, with the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and Ancient Egypt being some of the first. Through advancements in literature, law, and architecture, these communities established the groundwork for contemporary urban living.

Greek and Roman Influence: Ancient Greece and Rome had a significant influence on Western philosophy, politics, and society. Roman law and engineering established standards that still apply today, while philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle had a profound impact on intellectual thought.

Middle Ages Era:This period was controlled by monasteries and churches. Monasteries’ became the main source of preserving knowledge and the copying of manuscripts. Codices became more popular during this period, it replaced scrolls. The invention of encyclopaedias’ as well as glossaries were used to organize and arrange general, classical and religious knowledge.

Feudal System: Feudalism emerged in the Middle Ages (5th to 15th century), when a tight social order was established through connections based on the trade of land for labour or service.

Cultural and Scientific Revival: During this time, there was a renaissance in scholarship, art, and architecture that gave rise to the Carolingian Renaissance and the High Middle Ages, which saw the establishment of universities and the building of Gothic cathedrals.

Crusades: The Holy Land had been under Muslim rule until a series of religious battles known as the Crusades were started. These battles had a significant impact on Middle Eastern and European history and enhanced commerce and cultural interactions between the East and the West.

Period of codification:There was the establishment of classification systems such as the Dewey Decimal System for the organization of libraries. Anthony Panizzi, an Italian librarian, convinced the British establishment that cataloguing and subject analysis is important. He invented the cataloguing code with 91 rules. Americans had an influence on cataloguing as they were behind Europe at this stage. Charles Ammi Cutter encouraged the idea that catalogues shouldn’t point only to an individual. He invented the ruling that subject headings should be used as a means to gain access to materials on the catalogue.

Legal Standardization: During the codification era, especially in the 19th century, laws were systematically arranged and standardized to create extensive legal codes like the Napoleonic Code, which had an impact on civil law systems all over the world.

Expansion of State Power: As governments tried to consolidate and impose uniform legal frameworks throughout their domains, diminishing the authority of regional customs and tribunals, codification frequently accompanied the emergence of nation-states.

Influence on Modern Law: Legal codes like the Swiss Civil Code and the German Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch (BGB) influenced modern legal systems and the fundamentals of civil law around the world. They also served as models for many other nations.

20th century era:Known as the area of codes. The development of metadata to enhance information organization and retrieval. The Americans and British developed the first international cataloguing code. The invention of global classification systems such as the Library of Congress Classification was established during this era.

Technological Revolution: With the creation of the internet, the airplane, and space exploration, among other unheard-of technological innovations, the 20th century saw a revolution in daily living, travel, and communication.

World Wars and Global Conflict: Two World Wars defined the century, causing significant social, economic, and geopolitical upheavals as well as changes in world politics and the rise and fall of empires.

Civil Rights Movements: With global campaigns opposing female injustice, colonialism, and racial segregation, the 20th century saw tremendous advancements in civil rights, including the US Civil Rights Act and the decolonization of Africa and Asia.
