How they went to war
USSR's Intentions
USSR saw Korea to be a communist bloc due to its proximity to China, USSR and Asia.
It wanted to use North Korean to spread communist ideology to the rest of Asia to counter US influence over Japan

USA 's Intentions
Initially focusing on Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines the USA turned its sight to Korea when USSR developed their atomic technology as well as the CCP winning the elections

The UN
The would lose its credibility if it did not take a firm stand as an organisation which protects international security.
after the North Korea invaded they passed a resolution to end hostilities and withdraw to the 38th parallel
When North Korea did not comply, the US influenced the UN to pass a resolution to act against N Korea with the help of armed forces from 16 member states.
This Force was led by MacArthur who claimed back all the lost territory but eventually crossed the 38th parallel into the Yalu river ignoring Trumans orders
This caused China to be involved in the war and use its full force and recaptured the rest of south korea
USSR who was a member state did not use its VETO power to the resolution as it was boycotting the conference because of Taiwan being given place instead of China in the UN
