SPAR South Africa Founded in 1963, currently runs four retail formats: SUPERSPAR (which is comparable to EUROSPAR in offer), KWIKSPAR (which focuses on convenience in city centers and high foot traffic locations), SPAR Supermarkets, and SPAR Express (which functions as a gas forecourt store in partnership with Shell) (Spar South Africa, 2024) .
The first nation outside of Europe to become a member of SPAR was South Africa. Independent retailers are granted sub-licences by SPAR South Africa to operate stores under any of the four formats; now, nearly all of the stores in the portfolio are independently owned. With interests in other markets, South Africa's parent company, SPAR Group Ltd Southern Africa, also manages the brand in neighboring African countries
