Why/when did it start?
Began as a result of people settling down and looking for a more permanent way to satisfy their needs (farming, sedentary village life, etc).
The warming climate is thought to have opened up the door to agriculture for some.
The end of the last ice age
Better chnaces to grow crops
Started around 12 000 years ago.
Thought to have occurred first in the Middle-East, followed by most civilizations making the same transition around 5 000 to 10 500 years ago.
What Were The Consequences?
Birth of agriculture and technological sophistication(consequences
New tools, new social structures, etc
Better housing meant for staying at one place for a longer time.
Growth of populations
New strategies to maintain good relationships with competing villages.
Land was cleared of native vegetation.
Shorter life expectancies (Neolithic populations)
Worse nutritional value in food
Specialized labor, as people settled down and had more time to focus on certain tasks
An improving and growing food supply enabled the growth of villages, towns, then cities (over the course of a long period of time).
(Social classes were determined by the work the person did, such as farming, protecting, so being a warrior, being a priest, leader, other craftmanship, etc)
