Printing Techniques - Coggle Diagram
Printing Techniques
Flocking
- Creates a velvet like texture on the fabric but adheres best to textured fibres typically natural fibres as high temperatures of heat are needed to set and melt the glue
- Requires a glue base to be applied before a
- Flock is applied using a heat press set to 165 degrees once the glue is fully dried
- Flock stays adhered to glued areas once cooled, leaving a fuzzy texture on the areas where glue was applied
Foiling
- Foiling is another heat and glue activated transfer to create metallic elements to screen print designs
- Similarly to flocking, foiling uses the same glueing and heat steps required prior to the foil application
- For this process apply glue with the design and dry using a hair dryer or heating device. Once glue is dry, cut desired colour of foil and using a heat press apply the foil to the glue
Low Tech Printing
- This techniques uses low impact objects to leave markings on fabrics
- Includes but is not limited to - scraping devices, cut out templates, stamps, tracings or images
- Does not typically require a screen to print, this technique is more creating organic shapes and prints using other objects
Metalic Paint
- Also called Metallic Permaset, this type of printing is similar to standard screen printing with a colour
- Metallic Permaset comes in a variety of colours and has a shiny, metallic or pearlescent finish to designs
- Unlike foiling, using metallic paint is only one set and the finish is able to be used as a accept and adhears to most surfaces without needing the application of heat
Puffy Paint
- For puffy paint the application is similar to Permaset as this type of ink is just a textured permaset
- For this technique you print designs like normal coloured permaset, however you let the paint air dry for 10 minuets before applying heat
- Using a heat gun lightly go over the painted areas, applying even heat over every section, watching the paint puff up and grown. Make sure the setting is low so that the fabric and the pain does not burn
Vinyl Transfer
- Vinyl transfer is another custom application and uses a plastic pre glued vinyl coloured sheet which gets cut and then heat applied
- Once desired shape is cut and the patch is laid in the desired area on the fabric, a heat press set to 165 degrees is used to fuse the shape to the fabric
- For additional affect, you can stitch on top of the transfer to add extra strength to the fuse and also to create a stitched appliqué look
Standard Colour Permaset
- Permaset is water based ink that adhears to most fabrics
- This type of pigment comes in multiple colours, with the base colour being white and you can purchase and mix your own colours to be used in multi-coloured designs
