Reptiles
What are reptiles, and what characteristics do they have ?
Vertebrates (have a bakbone)
Scaly Skin
All reptiles have scales or scutes. ...
Cold blooded
Lays eggs
Breethe through lungs
MEASURING Activity
measure the length of various toy reptiles or pictures using rulers or measuring tapes.
COMMUNICATION ACTIVITY
poster about a reptile of their choice, using their observations and findings from previous activities. They present their reports to the class, explaining the reptile's characteristics and how they observed or measured these traits.
Habitat
Desert
Forest
Oceans
Wetlands
Grasslands
Today, reptiles live in a wide range of habitats. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Many turtles live in the ocean, while others live in freshwater or on land. Lizards are all terrestrial, but their habitats may range from deserts to rainforests, and from underground burrows to the tops of trees. Libre text biology (2020)
Classification: Different types
Snake
Cobra
pythons
Vipers
Features?
No limbs
elonggated body
Specialised sense organs
Snakes have some clear differences from other reptiles. They have no limbs, no moveable eyelids, and no ear openings. The teeth of most nonvenomous snakes form 2 rows in the upper jaw and 1 row in the lower jaw. The teeth are curved backward to help keep struggling prey from escaping. Divers(2020)
lizard
Examples?
geckos
Iguanas
Chameleons
Features?
Movable eyelids
External ear openings
Like snakes, lizards have scales, paired male copulatory organs, and a flexible skull. Typical lizards have a moderately cylindrical body, four well-developed legs (although some lizards are legless), a tail slightly longer than the head and body combined, and movable lower eyelids.
One more type? Turtle
examples?
Sea turtles
Box turtles
Features?
Shell for protection
Beak like mouth
Armored skin
OBSERVING Activity:
use magnifying glasses to observe the texture, color, and patterns of reptile skin samples. They draw what they see and describe the texture (e.g., rough, smooth) on their observation sheets.
CLASSIFYING activity:
SORTING: sort the picture cards into two groups: reptiles and non-reptiles. They then further classify reptiles by specific characteristics (e.g., those with legs vs. those without legs).
Adaptations
Camouflage for protection
Venom
Strong jaws
Tough, scaly skin is one adaptation to this type of life. Well- developed lungs; a double-loop circulatory system; a water-conserving excretory system; strong limbs; inter- nal fertilization; and shelled, terrestrial eggs are the other adaptations that have contributed to the success of reptiles on land. COMPARING: REPTILE VS MAMMAL compare reptiles with mammals by looking at pictures or models of each. They identify similarities and differences in body coverings (e.g., scales vs. fur), movement, and body temperature regulation (cold-blooded vs. warm-blooded).
Diet
Carnivorous (meat-eaters) e.g., Snakes, Crocodiles
Carnivorous (meat-eaters) e.g., Some Tortoises
Omnivorous (eat both plants and animals): e.g., Some Lizards
With few exceptions, modern reptiles feed on some form of animal life (such as insects, mollusks, birds, frogs, mammals, fishes, or even other reptiles). Land tortoises are vegetarians, eating leaves, grass, and even cactus in some cases. Zug(2024)
Reproduction
Mostly oviparous (lay eggs)
Some are ovoviviparous (eggs hatch inside the female body)
Reptiles and mammals reproduce very differently. Most reptiles lay eggs, while mammals carry fertilized eggs internally, which they nourish through a placenta, and bear live young. NCSE(2010)

Reptiles are ectothermic or cold-blooded, which means they cannot control their own body temperature.
EXPERIMENTING ACTIVITY
place toy reptiles in different temperature zones (e.g., warm sunlight, cool shade) and predict how the temperature will affect the reptiles' "activity." They observe and record any changes and discuss how real reptiles might behave in similar conditions.
Turtles are reptiles because they are four-legged vertebrates with a cold-blooded metabolism and scales covering their body. Amphibians, on the other hand. have a smooth scaleless coating that is water-permeable Paddock park(2020)
All reptiles produce eggs. Most reptiles lay hard-shelled eggs, but a few give birth to live young.
