Why were they created?
In China, Buddhist practices prevented people from eating meat so plant based meat options replicating taste and texture. This also benefitted vegetarians as they had a new alternative besides tempeh and tofu.
Popularity spike
Early 2010s
Health consciousness: The rise of the internet and social media caused many to get educated on health and wellbeing through research, this resulted in people getting more health conscious.
Environmental concerns: Similarly to the point above, media allowed people to raise awareness about our environment and how our own diets can impact the wellbeing of our earth. This then caused popularity spike in the vegan and vegetarian diets.
