To help address the labor shortages as a result of WWII & rebuild the economy, Britain encouraged immigration from its former colonies. The British Nationality Act of 1948 had granted the status of "British subjects" to citizens of Commonwealth countries (the Caribbean, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh...), allowing them to move to Britain freely. In the 1950s, immigration continued & racial tensions increased, leading to the introduction of the Commonwealth Immigrants Act (1962) aiming to restrict immigration. So, although it intended to reduce racial tensions, immigrant communities continued to face discriminaton, racism & social exclusion.
