Focus and Aim
Focus
-
Promoting the production, use and sale of local produce in touristic destinations and its full integration in the tourism value chain.
-
Help conserve and preserve fragile marine ecosystems and serve as a vehicle to promote a blue economy
Tourism can accelerate the shift toward renewable energy and increase its share in the global energy mix
Aim
- Economic Viability: to make tourism destination and businesses viable, competitive and long-term successful
- Environmental Purity: to protect the land, air and water from the negative impact of tourisms
- Resource Efficiency: To promote the use of sustainable and renewable resources in tourism
- Biological Diversity: to conserve and protect natural areas, wildlife and unique habitats
- Physical Integrity: to protect the landscape (rural and urban) from degrading
- Community Wellbeing: to improve the life quality of local communities and ensuring they are respected and have access to resources
- Local Control: to empower local communities t have a role in planning and decision making regarding tourism in their neighbourhoods
Sustainable tourism is important, why?
- ensure the benefits of tourism outweigh the negatives
- preserve local cultures, traditions, religions, and buildings
- common tourisms account to 8% of global greenhouse gases emission
- reduce the effects of overtourism
- support local and indigenous communities
- protect natural resources and wildlife
- help every tourist become a more responsible tourist
Example of a country
Bhutan
It is the only carbon neutral country in the world, and it tries to keep visitor numbers low for fear that the onslaught of tourists will spoil the land.
The country’s Royal Society for the Protection of Nature ensures that the glacial valleys (which are the biggest tourist draws) keeps things maintained
Bhutan also has low emissions as they generate hydroelectric power through their many rivers, instead of using environmentally harmful fossil fuels.
Bhutan is living and breathing evidence that countries do not have to make the trade-off between economic progression and environmental conservation
