Applications of the properties
Finding the quadratic equation for profits
-10s^2 + 600s + 50s = 3000
-10s^2 + 650s - 3000= 0
(-2s + 120)(5s - 25) = 0
-2s +120 = 0 or 5s = 25
2s = 120 or s = 5
s + 60 or s = 5
therefore the roots are 5 and 60
The roots show that when the selling price is $5 or $60, the company not make any protfits.
Different parts of a quadratic graph
a. turning point
The turning point is the best selling price of frames
to maximize profits. x is the maximum price of the
frame, while y is the maximum profit.
-10s^2 + 650s - 3000 = 0
-10s (s + 65) - 3000 = 0
-10 (s + 65/2)^2 - 3000 + 10562.5 = 0
-10 (s + 65/2)^2 + 7562.5 = -
Therefore the turning point is (32.5, 7562.5
d. x- and y-intercept
The y-intercept is the loss accumulated when the frame is sold for $0 The x-intercept is the price to sell the frame at for a profit of $0
Since the equation is -10s^2 + 650s - 3000 = ,
the y-intercept is -3000
this shows that when the equation is Ax^2+Bx+C, C will always be the y-intercept
c. roots
The roots of the graph are the minimum and
maximum price of frame
Sample sale: linear graph
How we use the linear graph: As the selling price increases, the quantity sold decreases.
a. max profits
$7562.5k
b. best sale price
$32.50
d. the loss yielded by giving stuff for free
$3000
c. price that yields 0 profits
$5
b. equation
The equation of the graph is the profits/loss that will result from a certain selling price
