SCIENCE: scientific endeavour chapter 1
what is science(overview of science)
science is all about being curious and asking questions that helps us to learn more about the world. 2. science is the study of natural phenomena in the world. 3. science is manifested in many aspects of our daily life.
Nature of scientific knowledge
science is evidence based.(important in supporting theories and hypothesis)
evidence:conducting experiments
evidence:obtained by observing
we use senses to make observation
quantitative/qualitative
quantitative
Quantitative data is numbers-based, countable, or measurable. involves senses and measurements taken using instruments. E.g. 500g,2cm,50s
qualitative
Qualitative data is interpretation-based, descriptive, and relating to language.involves senses.E.g.heavy,long,fast,odour
hear
touch
smell
taste
sight
how do we practice science
they make observations and develop possible explanations for natural phenomena, sometimes provides solution to problems that arise in daily life.
scientists engage the scientific community in discussions, using evidence to support their ideas.
scientists often investigate natural phenomena that they are curious about.
Hypothesis and variables
scientists need to craft a research question before research is conducted(research question is usually accompanied by a hypothesis)What is a hypothesis:is a proposed explanation for a natural phenomenon or a proposed solution to a scientific problem
what influences the way we practice science
value,ethic or attitude :
creativity
1.coming up with new ideas to approach and solve problems 2.figuring out how to collect meaningful data and exploring what those data mean
objectivity
1.ensuring that scientific claims, methods and results are based on facts and free from personal opinion or bias
2.designing experiments to achieve a purpose
intergrity
1.promoting the pursuit of knowledge and truth, and avoidance of error. 2.recording research data as observed. 3.promoting compliance with the law, health and safety
open-mindedness
1.having the ability to suspend judgement
2.listening to other people's viewpoints before coming to ones own conclusion
3.observing what is happening and the patterns that emerge, even when these different from one's predictions
perseverance
Having the determination to keep trying to keep trying to achieve something in spite of difficulties
