Man’s impact of on the environment 🌳
How does mans interact with his environment?
• Man depends on his environment for natural resources.
• Natural resources are resources that occur naturally on Earth. Examples are sunlight, air, forests, fossil fuels, land, water, metals and minerals.
• Natural resources are important for Man to obtain energy, food and materials.
• Man's interactions with his environment have both positive and negative impacts.
What Is The Negative Impact Of Man's Activities On His Environment
• Some of Man's activities have negative impacts on the environment.
Depletion Of Natural Resources
• Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, are used as an energy source for vehicles and factories. They are obtained from deep in the ground. They were formed from the remains of living things millions of years ago. Once they are depleted, they cannot be replaced.
• Metals and minerals are obtained from the ground to make things such as machines, utensils and jewellery. Once they have been depleted, they cannot be replaced.
• Trees in forests are cut down to obtain wood, which is used to make many things such as furniture and paper. If the number of trees that are cut down exceeds the number of trees that are replaced, forests can get depleted.
• Fish are caught by Man for food. Overfishing can cause the depletion of fish in the sea. If the rate of fishing exceeds the rate of reproduction of the fish, their population will decrease. They may become endangered or extinct.
Deforestation
• Deforestation is the clearing of large areas of forested land by cutting and burning down trees.
• Deforestation is carried out:
to provide land for people to use for farming or building on (this is why farming has both positive and negative effects on the environment),
to allow people to dig up fuels and minerals from the ground,
for wood which can be used to make paper and furniture.
Pollution
• Pollution is caused by releasing pollutants into the environment.
• A pollutant is any substance that makes the environment dirty or harmful to live in.
• Pollution can affect the land, the air and water bodies such as seas.
Global warming
• Certain gases in Earth's atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, trap heat from the Sun and make Earth warm.
• This warming effect is known as the greenhouse effect.
• The greenhouse effect keeps Earth from freezing.
What can man do to make positive impact on his environment
• Man is responsible for protecting his environment.
• He needs to carry out actions that have a positive impact on his environment.
• Some of the ways in which this can be done are conservation of natural resources and reforestation.
Conservation of Natural Resources
• We can conserve natural resources by practising the 3Rs — reducing, reusing and recycling
