Current medication, immunisation history and status
NICE traffic light system - to assess general appearance, vital signs, CRT, fluid status
Management
999 Ambulance if airway, breathing, circulation or conscious level compormised
If red features / serious life threatening cause of fever arrange 999 ambulance - features of sepsis /pneumonia/severe dehydration
Non life threatening red features arrange urgent face-face assessment within 2 hours if initial assessment by phone
If Amber features , arrange face - face assessment if initially assessed by phone
Immediate referral to paediatric specialist for infants aged under 3 months, suspected UTI
Hospital admission with carer's concern, no underlying cause of fever, previous experience of serious illness or death

If child can be managed at home - assess for underlying cause of fever, urine dip stick, MSSU,
Paracetamol or ibuprofen if child distress, should not be taken simultaneously but switching if other is ineffective and vice versa, measures to prevent dehydration

Specific Illnesses
Meningococcal disease e.g. non blanching rash, crt > 3sec, neck stiffness, unwell child
Bacterial meningitis e.g. bulging fontanelle, decreased level of consciousness, convulsive status#, neck stiffness
