Empathy and Indifference
Mona
Mona is Empathetic towards Amir's Family, letting them stay with her in a time of need.
Mona is indifferent to other immigrants in the world and truly understanding Amir's Family's position, not knowing or caring about them.
The Border Guard
Quiet Uncle tells him they are Muslim but he is indifferent and thinks they are lying and are Jewish for no reason.
Parents
Amir's Parents are Empathetic towards him and try to be the best parents they can in their difficult situation. They are empathetic to his situation not only because they are also living in the same situation but because they are good people.
Vanna's Parents are indifferent towards her, they both don't love each other and live miserable lives because of it. Neither of them really love their daughter either and only use her and someone to do chores or go run errands.
Madame El Ward
Madame El Ward is empathetic towards Amir and all of the other children that need homes. She's committed time to learning these children's language and accents and genuinely cares for them. She's the best person in this story.
Mohammed
He is very indifferent to everyone else on the Calypso. He doesn't care about any of them, all he cares about is himself and his safety and how he can get to his destination safely. He is the worst person in this story.
Kethros
Kethros is empathetic towards Vanna's mother. They were good friends in school and still keep in touch afterwards.
Kethros is also more empathetic to Vanna because of this relationship with her mother. Kethros could have been very cruel to Vanna but instead has her sent back home so her mother can deal with her. He knows that if he hurt Vanna he would also be hurting his friend. This form of empathy ends up being his downfall.
Kethros is empathetic to the little girl who is drowning. Despite how cruel he can be he genuinely cares about the residents of this island.
Kethros is indifferent towards Amir and not sympathetic to him or his situation at all. He wants him off of the island immediately. To my knowledge it's never really specifically stated why this is. It could be from trauma with immigrants in the past or just straight up racism. I don't know yet.
Vanna
Vanna is indifferent to the families staying at the Xenios. She breaks into one of their rooms and steals clothes for Amir. She does this for a noble cause because Amir's clothes were in very bad shape and they were desperate to find new ones.
Vanna is very empathetic towards Amir, she doesn't even know his situation but she understands he desperately needs help and she's willing to gave that to him.
Umm Ibrahim
She is empathetic towards Amir on the boat, she gives him food and comforts him when he needs it.
She becomes indifferent to Amir when the Calypso turns to chaos and the boat begins sinking. She sees that he needs help, and abandons him, leaving him to be robbed and beat by Walid.
Amir
Amir is indifferent to most people in the story. Not only because he is a nine year old and likely hasn't developed empathy yet but also because he is the one who needs empathy and sympathy in the story and isn't in very many situations to provide it himself.
