Diagnose anxiety if chronic physical health problems, seeking reassurance for somatic symptoms and repeated worry over different issues

Nature, severity and duration of symptoms
Current physical / emotional stress, history of physical or emotional trauma
History of self /family of mental health disorders, comorbid conditions e.g. cancer / chronic pain, history of alcohol or substance abuse
Anxiety can be adverse effect of some medicines / herbal e.g. beta-blockers, St John's wort.

Chronic physical condition e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory disease
Treatment

If Sertraline ineffective , alternative SSRI e.g. paroxetine OR Serotonin-adrenaline reuptake inhibitor e.g. venlafaxine

Explain adverse effects e.g. agitation, sleeping problems, anxiolytic effect

Review 1 week after starting treatment for Age <30 years and ethnic minority groups advise SSRI's and SNRI's associated increased risk of suicidal/self harm
