Ch. 11 Case Research
-
Case research is a difficult method that requires advanced research skills on the part of the researcher so often prone to error.
Problems: Research studies start without specific research questions so end up not having specific answers
Case sites are often chosen based on access and convenience rather than the research questions so cannot adequately address the research question
Researchers often do not validate or triangulate data collected using multiple means which may lead to biased interpretation based on responses from biased interviewees
Many studies provide very little details on how data was collected which may raise doubts about the reliability
Many case research studies do not follow through a phenomenon in a longitudinal manner so present only a limited view of organizational processes that are temporal
Case study is a method of studying a phenomenon over time within its natural setting in one or few sites a positive manner for the purpose of theory testing
Strength: Used for either theory building or theory testing, positive methods used for theory testing
Strength: Can be modified during the research process if the original questions are found to be less relevant.
Strength: Research can help derive richer, more context, more authentic interpretation of the phenomenon of interest
Strength: The phenomenon of interest can be studied from perspectives of multiple participants and using multiple levels of analysis
