Pathophysiology of Elimination
Urinary Dysfunction
Alterations of Neuromuscular Function
Disease Process: Impaired signaling between the bladder and the brain/spinal cord, leading to issues like retention
Treatments: Intermittent catheterization, medications like anticholinergics
Causes: Spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis
Alterations of Patency
Disease Process: Enlarged prostate compresses the urethra, leading to difficulty in urination.
Treatments: Alpha-blockers, surgery
Causes: BPH, Urethral strictures
Alterations of Motility
Disease Process: Infection causes inflammation and pain leading to increased frequency of urination
Treatments: Antibiotics, increased fluid intake
Causes: UTIs, Obstruction by kidney stones
Alterations of Perfusion
Disease Process: Reduced blood flow to kidneys impairs their function over time.
Treatments: Medications to control blood pressure and blood sugar levels, Dialysis.
Causes: Renal artery stenosis, diabetes mellitus
Bowel Dysfunction
Alterations of Neuromuscular Function
Disease Process: Impaired nerve supply to the bowel leads to constipation or incontinence.
Treatments: Bowel training, stool softeners
Causes: Spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease
Alterations of Patency
Disease Process: Tumors obstruct the bowel
Treatments: Surgical resection, chemotherapy
Causes: Colorectal cancer, intestinal adhesions
Alterations of Motility
Disease Process: Abnormal bowel contractions lead to symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.
Treatments: Dietary modifications, medications like laxatives
Causes: IBS, constipation
